| gaga over Meryl Streep? Sorry I have never understood that. (Wed Jul 16, 2008 2:44am ET) | report post |

by cob I am a 58 year old male and I love movies as much as anyone but I just don't understand why most everyone (including my own wife) seems to think that Meryl Streep is one of the great actresses’ of our time. Sorry, I don’t see it. I have watched many other actresses’ better than Meryl Streep in movies. Someone here mentioned Jessica Lang; I have to say that I agree with their opinion that Lang is a much better actress than Streep and there are many more actresses that I enjoy, but I am not going to name more names. Meryl Streep just seems to be a rather ordinary actress in my opinion. I am not a professional film critic just an average male who has always enjoyed movies ever since I can remember. To me, there is nothing that really stands out with me about Meryl Streep and her acting. Can someone tell me what is all the fuss about her as such a great actress, and calling her a movie legend? I am sorry I don’t see it, what am I missing? I have seen quite a few of her movies over the years and I can’t think of one that I would want to watch again. If I see one of her movies being rerun on TV when I am flipping channels with my remote, I keep flipping channels. Yes, I know that she has won a couple of Oscars and that she has been nominated for many more but I have never been able to get into most of her movies that I have seen her in; she just doesn't do it for me as an actress. She is not really that attractive as a woman, not a woman that I would say is beautiful. I saw her tonight on David Letterman promoting her new movie Mama Mia; a musical featuring ABBA’s music with her and Pierce Brosnan singing. I thought that she came off as kind of phoney even though Letterman (who I do like) fawned over her. For what it is worth (and I realize, nothing) I never liked the music of ABBA either; their music always irritated me when ever I heard it on the radio back in the day it was popular. Now I see people on TV going gaga over Meryl Streep and Pierce Brosnan singing ABBA's music. Yes I heard Mama Mia was a hit Broadway show but why do it as a movie? More money for the producer I suspect and for ABBA too. I will definitely pass on Mama Mia and go see the new Batman movie that my wife wants to see this weekend. For those who think that I am a Meryl hater, I am not. I just don't understand the hype over her and her acting and I never have understood people’s fascination with her; just my two cents and my opinion which is not really worth anything to Hollywood.

| by sour grapes she hired a publicist right out of Yale, and her brand-name was, literally, "the greatest actress of her generation" - and people bought it and her. They still do. If her material is good (Postcards from the Edge) she can be funny. She is the Chevy Chase of acting: I'm Meryl Streep and you're not. I liked her in Ironweed. I had to hand it to her for her Ethel Rosenberg in Angels in America. She's basically a character actress. She is calculating - you nearly always see the technique. She likes to surround herself (Sophie's Choice) with weaker actors. The dingo ate her baby. Betty Buckley just did a bit part with more depth than Meryl's got. All you needed to be in Prada was dead. She owes much to her faithful hairdresser, Roy someone. Oh well. You want to see a great actress? Try Zohra Lampert in Splendor in the Grass.

| by Soup Have you seen the Devil Wears Prada? I can't even imagine any other actor pulling that off the way Meryl Streep did. She is completely convincing in every persona she portrays. When watching her films I am completely captivated by the character she becomes. Mike Nichols said that she puts a soul in each role she is in and I believe this is what differentiates her from others.

by emma i used to think she was a great actress. back in the early 90's i took quite a few film/acting courses at unc-chapel hill and every professor there SLAYED meryl streep. they said she was the worst actress ever and that her dad got her put on the cover of time magazine and got her connections and her career took off from there. they said she was NEVER actually a character. she was all posturing, pontificating, and affectations. they couldn't believe how highly regarded she was and they also despised winona ryder. but i was shocked about the meryl hatred. noone from the theater takes her seriously. they see her as an overrated windbag who somehow has fooled everyone.

| by jane hi emma,
thanks for your post - that's what i don't like about meryl streep either - the affectations. i think you're experiencing really good acting when you get lost in the character and the story. this never happens with streep - i'm always very much aware when she's using an accent and everything else she does while "acting."
i truly admire sean penn - when i watch him in a film i forget that it's him and believe he's the character he's portraying. he's an incredible actor and artist.
