Born in Boston, Rachins attended the Wharton School of Finance before moving to New York to study acting, performing in the Broadway productions of After the Rain and Hadrian the Seventh.
Off Broadway, he's been in The Trojan Women and Oh! Calcutta. Rachins has also appeared onstage in La Cage Aux Folles, Love Letters and Promises, Promises.
In 1972, Rachins put his acting career on hold when he was accepted as a fellow in the writing and directing programs at the American Film Institute. After AFI, he sold scripts to a variety of shows including Hill Street Blues, Fall Guy, Hart to Hart and Knight Rider. He also directed an episode of Paris, starring James Earl Jones.
Rachins returned to his acting career opposite his real-life wife, Joanna Frank, in Henry Jaglom's film, Always. The couple also played husband and wife in L.A. Law and recently formed a production company, Allofit Productions, which has acquired books and original screenplays to develop for television and feature films.
This summer, Alan has been concentrating on writing a collection of short stories which he has performed at various venues throughout Los Angeles.
